It can be hard to find a bushing setup that works well for you as a rider. With so many different brands to choose from, it can be hard to separate the quality products from the not-so-quality products. Here is a brief explanation of the bushing formulas offered by two of the foremost brands in the industry: Venom and RipTide. Between these two brands, it is pretty much a guarantee that you will find the right combination of aftermarket bushings to make your setup feel perfect. Both of these brands are at the forefront of aftermarket urethane products, and have something unique to offer in each one of their formulas and shapes.

Bushing Options

Venom:

Venom bushings are arguably the most commonly used bushing brand on the market due to their quality and dependability. Between HPF and SHR formula in all the different shapes they offer, there is something for every rider from beginner to advanced.

Venom HPF: Venom HPF formula bushings are one of the common choices for beginner to intermediate riders. While these bushings are an indisputable favorite of the advanced “core” downhill community, their even ratio of rebound (or return to center) vs. lean (squishiness) gives them a predictable turn that makes learning the basics of turning, carving, and bombing hills very approachable. At the same time, they are a go-to options for advanced skill level skaters all around the world.

Venom SHR: While often overlooked, Venom SHR bushings are an excellent option for more advanced downhillers that want a more responsive feel to their setup, or for avid cruiser / carvers / slalom riders that want their turns and carves to really “snap”. With a higher rebound formula, the SHR’s have a more aggressive return to center, while also having a “softer” more “twitchy” feel. With Venom SHR’s, what durometer a rider typically rides in HPF formula feels about one durometer option softer (ex: a 91a SHR feels about as soft as an 87a HPF).

RipTide:

RipTide is a company with a heavily loyal following. They offer a multitude of urethane formulas and bushing styles that can be utilized for many different riding styles and ability levels. While there is a plethora of options to choose from, any avid RipTide rider will tell you that it is well worth figuring out what suits you best. RipTide is generally sought after for their specificity and high quality.

RipTide APS: The APS formula offers the happy medium in terms of rebound out of the Riptide formula options. While these bushings offer similar return to center and stability as Venom FPS formula, they offer a slightly “softer”, more “turny” feel that is ideal for riders that enjoy these characteristics. APS formula is one of the netter options for beginner riders due to their happy medium between rebound and compression. However, APS formula is well loved by advanced core riders as well, showing that the APS bushings are extremely versatile.

RipTide WFB: This formula features a self lubricating compound, which is why there is a sort of residue on the outside of the bushing. This lubrication creates less resistance, and therefore provides deeper lean and faster transitioning turns. WFB offers lower rebound than APS, making it ideal for riders that want extremely fluid deep turns. For this reason, WFB is a good option for intermediate to advanced riders that want to have extra control over their bushings.

RipTide Krank: This is RipTide’s highest rebound formula. Comparatively to APS and WFB, this formula will turn the least and have a very snappy, responsive return to center. When ridden loose for cruising and carving, their high rebound formula will compress easily but snap back to center very quickly, making the formula ideal for pumping and high-energy carving. When cranked down tightly for downhill applications, this formula offers great stability and a quick transition from turn to tuck. Typically speaking, these bushings are best suited to advanced riders or those who like an extremely lively carve / turn.

On Mixing and Matching Brands / Formulas:

The bushing connoisseur that wants to perfectly dial each setup as specific as can be may decide to explore mixing bushings brands and formulas to get the perfect ratio of lean to rebound. This can be an extremely rewarding process when experimented with properly, but can also be a difficult process. If you decide to venture down this path, it is recommended to always place the higher rebound bushing boardside, and the lower rebound bushing roadside. This will allow the turn to initiate more easily at the start of the turn, and supply more resistance as the rider leans deeper into the turn.

From least rebound to most rebound, the bushings options above are as follows: RipTide WFB, RipTide APS, Venom HPF, Venom SHR, Riptide Krank.

Reconcile Your Unconscious Beliefs

When was the last time you paid attention to your thoughts? I mean, really noticed your thoughts without judgement? Here’s the thing: most people are oblivious to their thoughts because it is like a crowded freeway in their mind, where drivers are asleep at the wheel. This is what many people experience with their thoughts. The noise is overwhelming, so they ignore their thoughts. However, this is a problem because if we are unaware of our thoughts, how can we trust what we think, let alone trust ourselves to communicate truthfully?

Your conscious thoughts are the artefacts of your unconscious beliefs. Let me explain what I mean. Thoughts are the storehouses of the unconscious mind and they define reality as you believe it to be. However, they are subjective, meaning what you believe about the world differs from others. As the French-born novelist Anaïs Nin said: “We don’t see the world as it is, we see it as we are.” Meaning, your observations are based on your perceptions. You create a mental model of the world through your conditioning and project it outwardly. To use a simple analogy: Your unconscious beliefs can be likened to a musician playing an electric guitar, whereby the amplifier is the projection for the sound. The musician represents our unconscious mind, and the amplifier is the conscious mind. It can only project what the guitarist plays, not change the music.

In other words, no matter how hard you try to change your conscious thoughts, it is futile until you reconcile your unconscious beliefs. It is because the unconscious represents your accumulated thoughts, beliefs, and experiences from childhood. It is the storeroom for experienced trauma and the canvas upon which you perceive life. For example, if you had a tough childhood, you may have created a belief the world is not safe. Moreover, life is unfair, and it is difficult to express oneself because you are never heard. You wouldn’t be wrong in believing this, especially if exposed to trauma as a child. It is often said: Even though your wounds are not your fault, your healing is still your responsibility. Therefore, we must rewrite the influence of our upbringing by transforming our beliefs, so we don’t carry our trauma into the future.

Change Your Internal Scripts

Are you comfortable with this idea that your unconscious mind determines the quality of your life? To create a better future requires transforming unconscious thoughts to be in harmony with the reality you wish to live. This is because many of your thoughts are outside of your awareness, and it is difficult to determine the origins of your unconscious beliefs. Typically, you can look at areas of your life not functioning optimally, such as your relationships, finances, career, and health. Where there is a dysfunction in these respective areas, chances are, you are manifesting via your unconscious beliefs. The good news: you can change your internal scripts by making conscious what is unconscious. It requires re-internalising a new belief and rehearsing it until it becomes your new reality.

To put this another way: to make conscious the unconscious, requires being mindful of your outdated scripts (beliefs) and creating new mental associations. For example, I had a stern upbringing from an uncompromising father. Nothing I did was good enough for him; he always found fault with my choices. This resulted in repressed anger and feelings of shame, guilt, and unworthiness into early adulthood. When triggered as an adult, these unconscious wounds took centre stage and played out in my life. It felt normal to react this way because I was unconscious of my reactions. This is the biggest insight I hope you take from this article: When unconscious beliefs are repeated and reinforced, they become an automatic response and feel normal to you.

Don’t Fight The Ego

To further reinforce this idea: If someone criticises you, you might think they are being cruel and unfair. After all, they are the source of your pain; you assume. However, if you are in an intimate relationship, where the other person mirrors your unconscious beliefs, you will go to war to defend your position. If the relationship breaks down, you might decide to work on untangling your unconscious wounds. In my case, I spent years transforming my unconscious beliefs because I did not want to be dictated by my unconscious beliefs. Nowadays, when I experience anger, criticism, or shame, I am mindful of my reactions. I am no longer entangled in my unconscious reactions. Instead, I allow them to pass through my consciousness without being dictated by them.

I am not trying to remove the unconscious belief because it has a right to exist. Fighting the ego is a sign of resistance, and it will push back because the ego does not want to be suppressed. The aim is to be aware of your beliefs when they emerge, without opposing them. It is why I am drawn to the quote by author William Whitecloud who writes in Secrets of Natural Success: Five Steps to Unlocking Your Inner Genius: “The point is, though, that you don’t have to change your beliefs, you only have to change your focus. You only have to change what you put your energy in and therefore give the power to.” As Whitecloud articulates, you don’t need to manipulate your beliefs, but redirect where you give your attention. By recognising your unconscious beliefs, you shine a light on them through an expanded your awareness. Through regular practice, your unconscious thoughts will naturally subside because you are no longer resisting them. They are free to come and go without resistance.

Considering this, I invite you to undertake an exercise and journal two or three beliefs holding you back in your life. If you’re unsure, consider areas where you’re experiencing problems. If you still find it difficult to identify these areas, ask someone close to you for help. Once you’ve identified two or three beliefs, I encourage you to work through your beliefs using Byron Katie’s powerful self-enquiry program, The Work. It comprises journaling your answers to four questions, to see how those beliefs are negatively influencing your life. Ultimately, we must become attentive to our unconscious beliefs and not be dictated by them. After all, if we are the accumulation of our unconscious beliefs, we have the power to transform them in alignment with our core self.

We think that BMW has got it right again with a dynamic and thoroughly contemporary design which keeps the 5 bang up to date.

The new 5 Series comes with an array of EfficientDynamics technologies. There’s Auto Start-Stop, optimum gearshift indicator, Brake Energy Regeneration, Active Aerodynamics and low rolling resistance tyres. In addition a state-of-the-art 8-speed automatic transmission with a longer final drive ratio to reduce engine revs at motorway speeds helping to achieve great fuel consumption.

In the driving stakes BMW has kept the trademark 50:50 weight distribution, which along with the front-engined, rear-wheel drive layout, makes the 5 Series more agile than rivals. There’s also no reason to expect anything other than the excellent build quality that we’ve become used to.

The latest 5 Series is evolutionary rather than revolutionary but when you’re starting so close to perfection that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The 520d ED delivers strong real world performance whilst achieving fuel economy that shames many city cars. With a brilliant blend of quality, style, performance and driving entertainment, it remains our favourite executive car.

It wasn’t too long ago that Mercedes struggled to get into this guide but with a new range of super hi-tech engines that is all about to change. Mercedes may have been the slowest of the German manufacturers to bring fuel-efficient models to market, but the results are impressive.

Gone are the days when you could tell how big a Mercedes engine is just from looking at the badge. As a case in point, both the E200d and E220d share the same 2.0 litre engine. They even have the same compression ratio (an impressively high 15.5:1 since you ask) so the difference in power is more to do with engine management than old school engineering.

Either engine is more than up to the job of providing decent pace and given that they achieve the same official fuel consumption the choice is likely to come down to budget. It is worth noting that you need to stick to the standard 17 inch wheels to get the best efficiency with larger rims resulting in a hefty penalty (up to 10 gCO2/km).

To keep the E-Class ahead of the competition the standard fit automatic gearbox now packs 9 ratios which goes some way to explaining the excellent official fuel consumption figures. Left to its own devices it will shuffle up into the highest gear possible but you can take control of affairs if you want to press on thanks to ‘Dynamic Select’ which provides ECO, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and a mix and match setting.

The latest E-Class takes the best aspects of the previous model but adds state-of-the-art engines and a contemporary interior to keep it feeling fresh. The exec Mercedes has always lagged behind the 5 Series and XF in the driving stakes but it is now closer than ever which means that there is no longer a default option. Which one you pick will come down to personal taste as they all represent executive saloons at the top of their game.

The renaissance of Jaguar has been one of the most surprising stories of recent years. In 2008 Tata bought the brand from Ford, who never quite got to grips with what to do with Jag, and made two very important decisions; Jaguar needed investment, and Tata put plenty of cash on the table, but crucially it didn’t need management interference.

The XF is the latest confirmation that Tata was absolutely right. Jaguar never forgot how to build contemporary executive saloons, it just wasn’t allowed to. The XF takes the fight to the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes E-Class head on and is all the better for it.

Jaguar has invested heavily in integrating aluminium into its production models with fantastic results. The latest XF is significantly lighter than the competition and is just 4% heavier than the smaller XE. Such a radical weight loss diet gets a big thumbs up from us as it benefits fuel consumption, handling and performance.

Alongside the advanced construction materials the XF also boast a brand new ‘Ingenium’ engine which finally provides Jaguar with a world class diesel engine. It also contributes to the weight loss thanks to yet more aluminium and its compact size. At the same time it is capable of producing impressive power and torque figures which imbue the Jag with sprightly performance.

There has never been much wrong with the way that the XF drives or looks, but it has never had a really efficient engine. With this issue now firmly addressed the combination of excellent official fuel economy, engaging dynamics, impressively low kerb weight and svelte looks make for a compelling proposition.

The Lexus GS has graced the pages of Green Car Guide for a number of years, but thanks to the performance hybrid approach Lexus has never truly explored the fuel consumption potential of the system, preferring to benchmark fuel economy against petrol rivals and turn the wick up than chase after diesel figures and dilute the performance. That is until now.

The 300h has very clearly been designed to take the fight to diesel rivals with fuel economy, performance and price all mimicking the front-running German offerings. Lexus has long claimed that its petrol/electric hybrid system can do everything that a diesel can, and the repost has been ‘prove it’. It appears that it does pay to be careful what you wish for, as on paper the 300h is up to the task and most surprisingly this includes the list price.

To extract better fuel economy there have been some big mechanical changes. Out goes the 3.5 litre petrol engine and in comes a 2.5 direct injection unit which produces a restrained 178 bhp. This is supplemented by a detuned electric motor which produces an additional 140 bhp providing a very favourable total system output of 220 bhp. Drive is still transmitted to the rear wheels through a CVT gearbox which as ever is great for fuel economy and frustrating if you are pressing on.

So the Lexus can beat diesel rivals for pure grunt but what about torque? The petrol engine can’t get close, with 163 lb ft at a lofty 4200 – 5400 rpm it won’t see which way the competition went. But as ever with hybrids, that’s only half the story. The electric motor comes to the rescue once more, with a handy 221 lb ft available from idle it fills in the gaps excellently and keeps the GS 300h in the race.

The GS remains exquisitely finished and arguably is better suited to the lower output system as it is competent to drive rather than razor sharp. The 300h is no more expensive than diesel rivals, has competitive fuel economy and thanks to petrol emitting less CO2 than diesel, falls into VED band B and attracts substantially lower company car tax. It also has the advantage of emitting no PM and very little NOx for which diesel rivals need to resort to expensive exhaust after-treatment. The GS still isn’t perfect but the 300h is a good enough package to make you think twice before ordering a diesel rival. It seems that Lexus wasn’t joking after all, petrol hybrids really can take on diesels at their own game.

Orbital welding is Automatic Tunguston inert gas welding. It eliminates chances of manual errors in welding. It produces identical welds for hundred of times hence accuracy in welding.

Orbital welding was first used in the 1960`s when the aerospace industry recognized the need for a superior joining technique for aerospace hydraulic lines. A mechanism was developed in which the arc from a tungsten electrode was rotated around the tubing weld joint. The arc welding current was regulated with a control system thus automating the entire process. The result was a more precision and reliable method than the manual welding method it replaced.

Orbital welding became practical for many industries in the early 1980`s when combination power supply / control systems were developed that operated from 110 V AC and were physically small enough to be carried from place to place on a construction site for multiple in-place welds. Modern day orbital welding systems offer computer control where welding parameters for a variety of applications can be stored in memory and called up when needed for a specific application. The skills of a certified welder are thus built into the welding system, producing enormous numbers of identical welds and leaving significantly less room for error or defects.

Orbital Welding Equipment

In the orbital welding process, tubes / pipes are clamped in place and an orbital weld head rotates an electrode and electric arc around the weld joint to make the required weld. An orbital welding system consists of a power supply and an orbital weld head.

Power Supply: The power supply / control system supplies and controls the welding parameters according to the specific weld program created or recalled from memory. The power supply provides the control parameters, the arc welding current, the power to drive the motor in the weld head and switches the shield gas (es) on / off as necessary.

Weld Head: Orbital weld heads are normally of the enclosed type and provide an inert atmosphere chamber that surrounds the weld joint. Standard enclosed orbital weld heads are practical in welding tube sizes from 1/16 inch (1.6mm) to 6 inches (152mm) with wall thickness` of up to 0.154 inches (3.9mm) Larger diameters and wall thickness` can be accommodated with open style weld heads.

The Physics of the GTAW Process

The orbital welding process uses the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process (GTAW) as the source of the electric arc that melts the base material and forms the weld. In the GTAW process (also referred to as the Tungsten Inert Gas process – TIG) an electric arc is established between a Tungsten electrode and the part to be welded. To start the arc, an RF or high voltage signal (usually 3.5 to 7 KV) is used to break down (ionize) the insulating properties of the shield gas and make it electrically conductive in order to pass through a tiny amount of current. A capacitor dumps current into this electrical path, which reduces the arc voltage to a level where the power supply can then supply current for the arc. The power supply responds to the demand and provides weld current to keep the arc established. The metal to be welded is melted by the intense heat of the arc and fuses together.

Reasons for Using Orbital Welding Equipment

There are many reasons for using orbital welding equipment. The ability to make high quality, consistent welds repeatedly at a speed close to the maximum weld speed offer many benefits to the user:

o Productivity. An orbital welding system will drastically outperform manual welders, many times paying for the cost of the orbital equipment in a single job.

o Quality. The quality of a weld created by an orbital welding system with the correct weld program will be superior to that of manual welding. In applications such as semiconductor or pharmaceutical tube welding, orbital welding is the only means to reach the weld quality requirements.

o Consistency. Once a weld program has been established an orbital welding system can repeatedly perform the same weld hundreds of times, eliminating the normal variability, inconsistencies, errors and defects of manual welding.

o Orbital welding may be used in applications where a tube or pipe to be welded cannot be rotated or where rotation of the part is not practical.

o Orbital welding may be used in applications where access space restrictions limit the physical size of the welding device. Weld heads may be used in rows of boiler tubing where it would be difficult for a manual welder to use a welding torch or view the weld joint.

o Many other reasons exist for the use of orbital equipment over manual welding. Examples are applications where inspection of the internal weld is not practical for each weld created. By making a sample weld coupon that passes certification, the logic holds that if the sample weld is acceptable, that successive welds created by an automatic machine with the same input parameters should also be sound.

Industries and Applications for Orbital Welding

Aerospace: As noted earlier, the aerospace industry was the first industry to recognize the requirement for orbital welding. The high-pressure systems of a single plane can have over 1,500 welded joints, all automatically created with orbital equipment.

Boiler Tube: Boiler tube installation and repairs offer a perfect application for orbital welding. Compact orbital weld heads can be clamped in place between rows of heat exchanger tubing where a manual welder would experience severe difficulty making repeatable welds.

Food, Dairy and Beverage Industries: The food, dairy and beverage industries require consistent full penetration welds on all weld joints. Most of these tubing / piping systems have schedules for cleaning and sterilization in place. For maximum piping system efficiency the tubing must be as smooth as possible. Any pit, crevice, crack or incomplete weld joint can form a place for the fluid inside the tubing to be trapped and form a bacteria harbor.

Nuclear Piping: The nuclear industry with its severe operating environment and associated specifications for a high quality weld has long been an advocate of orbital welding.

Offshore Applications: Sub-sea hydraulic lines use materials whose properties can be altered during the thermal changes that are normal with a weld cycle. Hydraulic joints welded with orbital equipment offer superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Pharmaceutical Industry: Pharmaceutical process lines and piping systems deliver high quality water to their processes. This requires high quality welds to ensure a source of water from the tubes that is uncontaminated by bacteria, rust or other contaminant. Orbital welding ensures full penetration welds with no overheating occurring that could undermine the corrosion resistance of the final weld zone.

Semiconductor Industry: The semiconductor industry requires piping systems with extremely smooth internal surface finish in order to prevent contaminant buildup on the tubing walls or weld joints. Once large enough, a build up of particulate, moisture or contaminant could release and ruin the batch process.

Tube/Pipe Fittings, Valves and Regulators: Hydraulic lines and liquid and gas delivery systems all require tubing with connector fittings. Orbital systems provide a means to ensure high productivity of welding and improved weld quality. Sometimes the tubing may be welded in place to a valve or regulator body. Here the orbital weld head provides the ability to produce high quality welds in applications with restricted access to the weld joint.
